In 2015, the United Nations established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve by 2030 which call for global action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all.

When Murdoch University was established, it adopted important values that include equity and social justice, sustainability, global responsibility, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Much of Murdoch's research has reflected these core principles.

In 2019, Murdoch University became the first university in Western Australia to sign the University Commitment to the SDGs - an agreement "that affirms the university’s intention to support and promote the SDGs through their research, education and operations, as well as report on activities in support of the Goals."
