I want, therefore I am: A tribute to David Smail

McHoul, A., Rapley, M. and Hansen, S. (2003) I want, therefore I am: A tribute to David Smail. Clinical Psychology, 24 . pp. 13-19.

This is truly ‘the Antidepressant Era’ (Healy,1997). Recent estimates suggest that nearly 20per cent of male Britons are diagnosable with a‘mental disorder’ in any given week (Double,2002). And in Australia, psychiatrists estimatethat their GP colleagues are ‘failing to recognise’the presence of ‘mental disorders’ in upwards of 56 per cent of the cases they see (Hickie et al.,2001). Richard Reeves, in The Guardian (2002),notes that 40 per cent of Britons think life is worse now than it was five years ago and asks why ‘we feel so bad’. SANE Australia (corporateslogan ‘Meeting the Challenge of Mental Illness’)issues a ‘Factsheet’ which claims that ‘mental ill-ness is common’. It continues: ‘Twenty in every hundred people will experience some form of mental health problem at some time in their lives’ (SANE, 2000), and publicly reprimandsUnilever Australasia for its Sunsilk shampoo com-mercial which SANE’s ‘StigmaWatch’ campaignclaims stigmatises the ‘depressed’.
