Vaughn Bell of Murdoch University has been engaged in a Work Placement program at GHD as the final year major assessment.

GHD is a multidisciplinary professional services company serving clients in the global markets of Infrastructure, Mining and Industry, Defence, Property and Buildings and the Environment. The intern worked on projects between the offices of Building Services and Sustainability.

The main projects that comprised the internship were the Burrup Fertilisers Fugitive Emissions Inventory, the Craigie Leisure Centre Water Audit, Defects Liability Assessments for the Building Management System in the City of Wanneroo Civic Centre and Garden Office Park Building and Building Management Consultancy for the City of Joondalup.

Supplementary projects that provided the intern with engineering and process competencies involved the City of Joondalup CCP Emissions Inventory, electrical drafting work for various projects and providing engineering consulting services for building management systems in Garden Office Park and the City of Joondalup government buildings.

The Intern therefore was involved in many areas of work, which provided a steep learning curve and exercised the necessary technical and process competencies of Engineering Practice, Research/ Development/ Commercialisation, Engineering Practice, Engineering Operations, Investigating/ Reporting and Self Management in the Engineering Workplace.

Additional competencies learnt while working at GHD involved effective time management of project works through the utilisation of time sheets, consultation of staff with a wide range of technical expertise in order to get project work done, and investigative research of different products in order to deliver the client with the best possible service and to keep up to date with the
latest products in the industry.

Consultancy engineering was a first for the Intern and along with these learning opportunities it provided the intern to be able to exercise professionalism in both the quality of project work and in consultation with staff and clientele.
