The social contexts of learning: Re-reading the wheel

Bell, J. and Pearce, J. (1997) The social contexts of learning: Re-reading the wheel. In: 5th International Literacy and Education Research Network Conference on Learning, 1 - 4 October 1997, Araluen Arts Centre, Alice Springs

Context units in Schools of Education at Murdoch University and at other Australian Universities are in a double bind. Currently they must present a broad range of theoretical materials to students which relate to issues of philosophy, sociology and social justice in macro and micro educational settings. This information is complex, often abstract and has sometimes been criticised by students as seemingly "interesting but irrelevant" to their future work as teachers. Additionally the learning processes of context students are being constrained by increasingly limited teaching periods.

In this workshop we will explore how learning and understandings might be enriched through the use of non-traditional thinking and writing strategies and other participant interaction processes. We will do this by combining interactive thinking, writing and presenting on questions regarding the social contexts of schools and how learning is constructed in corresponding ways.
