Green light for Peel Inlet plan

Barker, E.A. (1988) Green light for Peel Inlet plan. The West Australian, 24 May 1988. p. 3 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Work on the Dawesville Cut could start this year as part of a $46 million plan to clean up the Peel-Harvey Estuary. A management programme and environment review released yesterday said that cutting the channel to the sea and stricter catchment management were essential. Other measures within the programme include changed land use, from agriculture to forestry, modified fertiliser use to cut phosphate run-off, and continued weed harvesting, which has cost more than one million dollars over the past thirteen years. The Premier, Peter Dowding said after a Cabinet meeting in Mandurah that the Government was ready to commit funds for the Cut if the Environment Protection Authority found it was a proper management option. Mr Dowding said the Dawesville Cut would be the most significant coastal engineering works in the South-West since C.Y. O'Connor built Fremantle harbour, and that more than seventy per cent of farmers were already cooperating in modifying fertiliser methods.
