WISALTS column

(1987) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 29 October 1987. p. 12 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Last week, the column mentioned a series of articles in the July issue of the National Farmer on soil degradation. Bruce Mills points out that like a few other important issues, land degradation failed to rate a mention in the run-up to the July Federal election, adding that neglect from politicians does not diminish the fact that land degradation remains a growing disaster of national proportions. He maintains that most of the "pathetic $5.5 million" funding allocated to the National Soil Conservation Program has been "chewed up in publicity campaigns and academic studies of questionable value". Mr Mills cautions against pouring unlimited funds into any programme without the necessary infrastructure in place, but also warns against vast funding allocation which will be chewed up in government administration and wages.
