WISALTS column

(1987) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 4 June 1987. p. 12 [Publication] [Special Collections]

The Denbarker Soil Conservation District held their annual meeting with guest speakers including Ross Fenwick from the Katanning office of the Department of Agriculture who spoke on perennials, and Kelly Cooke from CALM who spoke on tree species. Miss Cooke mentioned that fencing off creek lines introduced a fire hazard risk, and suggested burning every seven years as a general rule but did point out that each situation needs to be looked at individually. Mr Fenwick's talk gave hints on establishment and varieties of perennials, pointing out that perennials gave good protection against wind erosion, provided overgrazing of the paddocks is not part of the grazing management plan. The District Advisory chairman, Jim McGregor urged all land users to think soil conservation and act upon their thoughts to be able to keep full control of their farming operations.
