WISALTS column

(1986) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 29 May 1986. p. 10 [Publication] [Special Collections]

'Wetlands are not just for the birds' is the theme for World Environment Day, next Thursday 5 June. The emphasis for the day is the importance of the wetlands for us all. A pamphlet issued by the Commonwealth Department of Arts, Heritage and Environment shows water being important for life, with wetlands being a crucial part of the water cycle. Wetlands are needed for water supply, they act as filters, sponges and reserves of water and when a country is as dry as Australia, the presence of wetlands can be critical for the survival of life and for flood mitigation. There will be a special supplement in The West Australian on 5 June to mark the day, with a competition organised by the Department of Environment and Conservation will appearing in it.
