(1987) Letter to the editor - Salinity & erosion. The Gnowangerup Star, 17 December 1987. p. 1 [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
Responses to an article by Mr Worthsworth "Not enough is being done about salinity" that was published The Gnowangerup Star on 3 December 1987. The Secretary of the Ongerup Conservation Organisation writes that on reading the article suggesting the formation of a Parliamentary Committee their reaction was "Oh, no! Not again". The Ongerup Conservation Organisation has been working on this problem for 15 years and the evidence of over-clearing has been there for at least 50 years. Rod Sawyer writes that the problem of salinity is fast becoming disaster proportions and that a concerted effort from all groups as one body is needed. Mr Sawyer said the cost is very quickly getting out of reach of the average farmer to try and correct, and suggests that we need some sort of commitment in more grants or incentives, for example, 150% tax deduction in years of expenditure to try to get farmers to combat their salt soil problems.
