Degraded land crumbling beneath our feet

Harris, A. (1987) Degraded land crumbling beneath our feet. The West Australian, 11 July 1987. p. 15 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Former Environmental Authority chief research scientist, Dr Graeme Chittleborough states that Western Australia is living so far beyond its environmental means and could risk becoming a second Ethiopia in a couple of generations. Dr Chittleborough is the co-author of Western Australia's first environmental overview, produced by the Department of Conservation and Environment late last year. The report looks at the State's environmental position against the objectives outlined in the national and Western Australian conservation strategies. Both strategies set out the changes needed for sustainable development that allow people to satisfy their material needs and enjoy a reasonable quality of life in the future. Dr Chittleborough said the Environmental Protection Authority was operating within the charter set by the Government and did only as much as it was allowed.

This article contains five images: a portrait of Dr Chittleborough; reporter Alex Harris with salt encrusted trees at Pink Lake, between Quairading and Bruce Rock; a sample of saline build-up; and two views of degraded alluvial plains at Milly Milly in the South Gascoyne.
