Conference on river

Zekulich, M. (1987) Conference on river. The West Australian, 16 July 1987. p. 3 [Publication] [Special Collections]

A major conference to be held at Muresk will consider the deterioration of the Avon River and the associated Yenyenning Lakes near Beverley. The conference titled "The Avon, the worst is yet to come", will hear claims that the river is virtually a drain. A river bed clearing scheme from the 1950's to 1970's aimed at preventing flooding of towns in the valley has been blamed, causing extensive silting of river pools extending into the upper reaches of the Swan River. Greening Australia chairman David Bennett said the tragedy of the lakes was the loss of another wheatbelt wetland and better land management was urgently needed for catchment farmlands.
