Summary
A leaflet titled "Water Erosion and Waterlogging" has recently been produced by the Division of Resource Management and the Information Branch of the Department of Resource of Agriculture and funded by the National Soil Conservation Programme. The leaflet points out the frequency of water erosion and waterlogging in the state, looses with losses attributable to them (estimated $19 million in lost production plus capital costs of lost farmland), types of water erosion and the degree of damage they cause, factors affecting water erosion (for example amount of cover, soil types) and waterlogging facts and factors. It also points out that many of these problems are related to farm management and current farming practices. Solutions suggested include alternative paddock cultivations, use of minimum tillage, stubble retention, sensible stocking rates, farm plan alterations and replanting of trees on water-shedding areas.
