New tack in salt battle

Zekulich, M. (1986) New tack in salt battle. The West Australian, 19 August 1986. p. 35 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Bulyee farmer Ivan Lee stood this week in his healthy barley crop, one of many in this bumper Western Australian season so far. It is the first commercial crop he looks like harvesting since purchasing this property five years ago. The property has been badly salt affected but Mr Lee believes that measures which began in January this year will lead to the rehabilitation of all his salt affected country. Solutions to the widespread problem of fertile farmland salinity has been a controversial and stormy issue in recent years with often heated dispute over recommendations made by the Agriculture Department and supporters of the interceptor bank system. Steve West, a hydrologist and agricultural scientist and a member of Salinity, Hydrology and Soil Conservation Associates, says that effective action on Western Australian salinity has not occurred in the past, and that solutions have often been based on guesswork and inadequate investigation with misconceptions about the causes and treatment options available.

This article contains two images by Graeme Dalton: Ivan Lee examining some healthy barley; and Steve West and Ivan Lee looking over one of the electric pumps installed on the property.
