WISALTS column

(1986) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 27 March 1986. p. 11 [Publication] [Special Collections]

While commending the Department of Agriculture for their excellent 'Drainage Research Review' in the latest Journal of Agriculture, the column would like to take the opportunity to comment on the one paragraph referring to interceptor banks. "Interceptor drains are small structures constructed on a grade, and should not be confused with interceptor banks which are large, level, bull-dozer built structures designed to store intercepted water in the bank channels". The comments perhaps suggest an over-simplification of the author's grasp of the subject and the system. It must be pointed out that interceptor banks designed by WISALTS can be either grade or level. WISALTS consultants are trained to assess each site individually and they design an interceptor bank specific to each site. The Interceptor Bank System, property surveyed and installed by WISALTS trained personnel, controls waterlogging, water erosion and salinity; in addition it can be adapted to a waterharvesting system and encourages contour working.
