Tony leads fight against soil erosion

Tony leads fight against soil erosion. The North Eastern Farmer, p. 14 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Tony Plowman is the current landholder representative on the Soil Conservation Authority. He says that primary producer resentation on the authority has been important, and points to the great work done by the late Jack Gilmore of Balliang when he held the post. In the spring session of parliament, the Soil Conservation Authority will be disbanded with its staff already working for the Land Protection Service of the Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands. Tony argues that the soil conservation element in the Land Protection Service must keep working with the main aim of getting degraded rural land back into production, and says that the financial support the government offers to farmers must continue, without controls on the way reclaimed land is used in the future.

This article contains four images: Tony Plowman at his property at St. Hillier; fenced gullies on St. Hillier; gullies affected by erosion on St. Hillier; and gullies recovering from erosion after installation of diversion banks on St. Hillier.
