WISALTS column

(1986) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 11 September 1986. p. 10 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

"Had I applied my usual philosophy of 'wait and see' after spending $2300 in my first venture with WISALTS, I would suggest that today, I would not be the present president of the organisation. My first banks were pushed in 1980, and there is very obvious evidence that some thing are going wrong and there is need for upgrading this work. WISALTS now have access to more technology and are better equipped to deal with more of the problems. This leads me to the obvious question of how many 'graveyard' interceptor systems exist on West Australian farmlands." These comments were included in a letter to WISALTS members from President Lex Hardie, in the latest edition of the society newsletter. There are quite a number of people who may have been members of WISALTS who are not now, and quite a few of those have had interceptor banks installed in the early days of WISALTS, therefore likely to be quite a few 'graveyard' interceptor systems around - some owned by non-members, and other by members still committed to soil and water conservation. Many of the surveryors in the field are well aware of how to fix those 'graveyards' and to make doubly sure a two day compulsory field workshop for all consultants will be held later this month.
