WISALTS column

(1986) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 25 September 1986. p. 12 [Publication] [Special Collections]

The name of the Whittington Interceptor Salt Affected Land Treatment Society - especially in its shortened form of WISALTS - can sometimes be a little misleading. Certainly in the early days, salt scalds were the focus of attention and so the name was born. However, WISALTS and the Interceptor Bank System are not just about salt: in fact many farmers use the system more for water control than for eliminating salt scalds. Salt scalds tend to be the result of long term waterlogging, and it's best to treat waterlogging before it becomes a scald. The Interceptor Bank System controls surface and sub-surface water and either holds it on the landscape or carries it to a safe disposal point. This may be a dam to increase the water supply on farm, it may be a natural watercourse, or it may be another bank. Individual site assessment, planning and surveying are the key to successful water control on your farm - sites vary so much in many ways that one cannot transfer 'in toto' treatment design from one site to another. One unusual site was shown to interested people at the Annual WISALTS Open Day held recently at Mr and Mrs Des Moir's Deep Pool property on the Dale River near Beverley. Attendance at the 1985 WISALTS Field Day at Gavin Drew's property at Gingin, convinced the Moir's to go ahead and the Interceptor Bank System has provided the treatment necessary for the control of water to stop the flooding problem.
