Summary
Often what happends on top of our land - or inthe top few inches of our soils - is controlled by what's happening underneath. So, it is important to have some idea what is under there. WISALTS, through field officer Laurie Adamson of Quairading, uses a divining wire to search out throughflows deeper than are normally cut off by the interceptor banks, these are then sealed with plastic sheeting and although the technique is still regarded by WISALTS as being in the testing stage, thus far, when properly installed, it is proving effective. The findings of the wire are checked by backhoe holes before final plans are made. The main limiting factors of the wire is that some people find it impossible to use - there is just no reaction at all, whereas others can determine shape and depth of aquifers with ease. An experimental device pioneered by CSIRO from a mining development, could provide an answer to this problem. Peter Martin, information officer of the Division of Water and Soil Resources of CSIRO, says the device was originally developed for mineral exploration to help interpret changes in ore concentration. However, mining companies often found that soil salinity interfered with their readings. The meter will be on display at the Australian National Field Days at Orange, New South Wales next month (November 11-13).
