WISALTS column
(1985) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 3 January 1985. p. 49 [Document] [Special Collections]
Summary
One of the highlights of the WISALTS 1984 year was the visit by Eugene J (Red) Doering, hydrologist from the Northern Great Plains Research Centre in Mandan, North Dakota, from 21 March to 4 April 1984. Mr Doering has some pertinent comments to make after his two week tour of the state inspecting WISALTS work as well as other methods of tackling water control. Recommendations, too formed an important part of his reports to WISALTS (copies of which were circulated to many people involved in agriculture; copies are still available from the secretary) and some of these recommendations were for research directions. 1984 saw plastic sheeting installed at several sites through the agricultural areas to further test about this technique which will be put into practice in 1985. The annual general meeting in September saw no major changes in personnel and shortly afterwards, the surveyors committee became a reality. At the Dan Keast trial site at Dangin, WISALTS will undertake some repair work to the banks, including some more plastic sheeting to stop damaged caused by deep throughflows.
