WISALTS column
(1985) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 31 January 1985. p. 6 [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
In one of the first farming papers in 1985, an article outlined the priorities set by the Minister for Primary Industry, John Kerin within his portfolio for the next three years. As the Government continues its fight to improve the economy, emphasis in the farm sector will be on farm costs; the reform of statutory marketing authorities; and research will keep a high place on the priority list. Mr Kerin declared during the election run-up that he felt the best thing any government could do for the farm sector was to provide the best macro-economic environment in which farmers could operate. The Minister hopes that the conference on farm costs to be held early this year (and the National Agricultural Outlook Conference currently on in Canberra has farm costs as one of its agenda items) will improve farmers' understanding of the Government's problems, and vice versa.
