Summary
The National Conservation Strategy for Australia originated with the publication of the World Conservation Strategy in 1980. The strategy was launched in over 30 countries around the world, and was accepted on behalf of the Australian people by the then Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser. One of the main recommendations of the world strategy was the development of national strategies, and at a national conference in June 1983, representatives from various groups reached consensus on the Australian Strategy. This has four main objectives which, in brief, are: to maintain essential ecological processes and life support systems; to preserve genetic diversity; to ensure the sustainable utilisation of species and ecosystems; to maintain and enhance environmental qualities.
