It's time to look after ourselves

Cameron, J. (1986) It's time to look after ourselves. Elders Weekly, 25 September 1986. p. 10 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Jock Cameron, Managing Director of Cameron Walshe (WA) Pty Ltd, notes the tough Budget is a clear warning that our economy is in for some testing months, and the tightening of welfare and social security pay-outs is a distinct message for all of us who expect the Government to look after us in our old age. The Government has deliberately lifted local interest rates to attract overseas capital, helping to stabilise the Australian dollar, throughout 1986. The Budget papers revealed a troubled outlook for our economy with no improvement in world commodity prices expected this financial year to help our export earnings. No matter what lies ahead for Australia, Mr Keating's Budget is the strongest signal yet that we have a responsibility for our own affairs and our own financial future.
