Two or three tough years ahead
(1986) Two or three tough years ahead. Elders Weekly, 25 September 1986. p. 8 [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
A record attendance of farmers and financiers from as far afield as Morawa, Bruce Rock and Perth attending the 1986 Public Seminar organised at Wongan Hills by Planfarm, rural consultants and were given several challenges by keynote speakers. Renowned economic forecaster and consultant, Philip Ruthven of IBIS, said farmers were in for two or three more tough years before a one by one recovery of commodity prices leads to another buoyant period for agriculture in the early 1990's. Wheat Board member, Trevor Flugge said there was no escaping the current over-supply in the world wheat market, however he was confident of a price recovery as the current downturn resulted in a reduced production in many countries where growers were under even more pressure than Australia. In contrast, Grain Pool Executive, Kevin Swan was optimistic for the market prospects for lupins from the 1986 harvest and for future years. In discussing alternative farm programmes for 1987, Planfarm Consultants, Peter Falconer, John Abbie and Michael Ferguson emphasised the higher return available from lupins on soil types where these could be grown with reliable yield expectations.
