Help is at hand to stop degradation, salinity
(1986) Help is at hand to stop degradation, salinity. The Farmers Weekly, 1 October 1986. p. 11 [Publication] [Special Collections]
Summary
Wide-ranging measures to help farmers halt land degradation and the salinity of water resources in Western Australia are proposed in a new State Government report. The measures aim to help conserve native bushland in farming areas and to foster replanting in strategic cleared areas. They include tax concessions and changes to rating procedures, the preparation of land management plans, environmental impact statements for land proposed for release for agriculture and improved advisory services for farmers. The report, prepared by the Land Resource Policy Council, is titled "Conservation of Native Vegetation in Farming Areas" and was released last week by the Premier, Brian Burke for public discussion and comment. Mr Burke said a major thrust of the report was reversing the decline in the number of trees in the rural areas. The decline had been a major contributor to land degradation and salinisation of water resources. He also said that the report looks at ways of getting practical advice and assistance to farmers on carrying out soil conservation and tree planting. The report examines alternatives to severe controls over clearing in farming areas, noting that a framework for voluntary action exist in Western Australia through the soil conservation district committees.
