Summary

The broadening base of West Australian agriculture through the widespread implementation of agroforestry systems as one of Henry Esbenshade's strongest desires. Mr Esbenshade is the president of the American branch of the International Tree Crops Institute and has been in Western Australia for some time, doing PhD studies on changing land use with agroforestry and tree crops at the University of Western Australia. Recently completing a study for the Land Management Society. Mr Esbenshade chose representative areas he believed covered the various climatic conditions which prevail in Western Australia, with a personal interest in the development of the carob tree which has the ability to provide soil stability, a barrier to wind erosion, valuable stock fodder with its sugary seed pods and seeds which could prove profitable to many a farmer. His interest and knowledge of the tree has resulted in the publication of his book, "Carob Growing in Australia", and his increasing involvement in the Western Australian branch of Men of the Trees.
