Summary
A WISALTS field day was held on 14 February at the WISALTS Trial Site on the property of Jim Erskine at Denbarker, with about 50 farmers in the Mount Barker area attending. Formed seven years ago, WISALTS has had good results in the prevention and reclaiming of salt affected farming land using interceptor banks, and the trial site in the Mount Barker area was to test and prove the bank would work in a high rainfall area. The selected area was typical of the problem facing farmers in the Denbarker area, high country falling into a valley with salt affected areas caused by waterlogging on the flats. Harry Whittington, assisted by Graeme Henderson and Jim McGregor, surveyed the site and mapped out where the banks would be installed. A demonstration was then given on the construction of an effective bank.
