Summary

There is a need for a firm national drought policy - something which has been highlighted by the possibility of a major drought in Western Australia, according to the Primary Industry Association. The Primary Industry Association and National Farmers Federation delegate to the committee, Winston Crane recommended to the National Farmers Federation that the committee be bypassed and approaches be made to the Minister as the operations of a Federal Drought Committee have been so lethargic having met only twice in the past 20 months. Mr Crane said that the Drought Consultative Committee would be urged to consider the inclusion of an interest rate subsidy and a freight subsidy for transporting stock to slaughter in addition to existing drought relief measures.
