Another farmer plight survey

(1985) Another farmer plight survey. Elders Weekly, 25 July 1985. p. 4 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

A joint survey between the Primary Industry Association and the State Government on the extent of farmers' financial difficulties in grain growing areas will be carried out. The aim of the survey is to determine the demand for credit at the beginning of the 1986 farm planning year and of any of the farmers' debt servicing difficulty and the viability status of farms in grain growing areas. Winston Crane, president of the Primary Industry Association, said the financial implications of lower grain production in the 1985 season will mean many growers will face an intolerable financial burden after the 1985-86 report. Mr Burke said that with farmers' worsening trade terms, the current poor season couldn't have come at a worse time for farmers and the Western Australian economy. The Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Dick Old, said there have been a number of surveys, seminars and submissions to discuss financial hardship in the rural sector and farmer cost problems in recent months, and the government is not taking action to overcome the problem.
