$2.5m. plan for estuary control

Barker, E.A. (1985) $2.5m. plan for estuary control. The West Australian, 14 August 1985. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

The Western Australian Government will spend at least $2.5 million in the next 12 months implementing part of a six-point plan to combat algae and navigation problems in the Peel-Harvey Estuary. The Premier, Brian Burke announced the proposed action by the government in Mandurah recently. Mr Burke also released the public environmental report on the proposed Mandurah channel dredging and an environmental review and management plan for Peel-Harvey Study Group. The reports will be assessed separately by the Environmental Protection Authority and will be open for public comment. If all the recommended options were adopted, the cost would be $40 million over four years. The proposed dredging work was to improve the navigability of the Mandurah Channel and help the water exchange in the Peel Inlet. The estuary's condition had deteriorated over the past 30 years and it was of critical importance to the long-term future of Mandurah as a tourist and recreational centre to improve its health.
