More understanding of farming needed

Driver, M. (1985) More understanding of farming needed. Elders Weekly, 5 September 1985. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

The Minister for Primary Industry, John Kerin makes a plea for a better, broader and more informed debate on farm policies. Mr Kerin was addressing the National and Rural Press Clubs in Canberra and said the farm sector should analyse the 1985/86 budget in terms of the Government's overall policies for the rural and provincial Australia. Mr Kerin said that this years budget was good news for farmers and it is clear the Hawke government is managing the economy better than any other in recent times, the Government's budget approach had been to create a balance in spending to provide the best environment possible for continued economic recovery. He said he would like to see the debate about agriculture broadened to be more of the political agenda of metropolitan Australia.
