The John Tonkin Tree Awards are sponsored by the Western Australian Government as part of its support for Greening Australia (WA) and will be presented for the first time this year. Premier Brian Burke announced the Government's support for the state branch of the nationwide organisation in December last year. The aim of the awards is to encourage all levels of the community to be involved in practical projects for the regeneration, protection and re-establishment of Western Australia's vegetation. Nominations for the awards are being called for in the eight categories.
