Is salinity costing you?

West, S. (1984) Is salinity costing you? The Express, 1 November 1984. p. 7 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Farming feature by Steve West, a qualified hydrologist and agricultural adviser, that most people are not aware of how much agricultural land we are losing due to salinity encroachment. Barley grass only has nutritional value in the first six weeks, and from this time on, stock left grazing on areas dominated by barley grass will tend to lose condition. Salinity reduces the optimal stocking capacity on farms which costs farmers productivity. Farmers who have increasing saline areas are losing a portion of their capital investment.
