WISALTS column

(1985) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 20 December 1985. p. 41 [Publication] [Special Collections]

There is increasing awareness of soil degradation and some of its causes and some possible answers. Queensland soil scientist, Dr Brian Forbes, Dean of Applied Science at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education compares our rapidly deteriorating soils with the position of Ethiopia and warns that without urgent action, our country could face a similar crisis situation. Dr Roberts spoke at a CSIRO seminar, and indicated that the urgency of the situation is not getting through to the people who can help. He called for new laws to be introduced to control clearing of land by landowners and for an educational programme to inform farmers and politicians of the urgency of the situation.
