Growing awareness

(1984) Growing awareness. Elders Weekly, 12 April 1984. p. 6 [Publication] [Special Collections]

The Minister for Agriculture, Dave Evans notes that there is an increasing awareness of land degradation and the need for rehabilitation in rural areas. Mr Evans said committees had been established in the Yilgarn, Jerramungup, Gingin and East Perenjori Shire Council areas. Dowerin, Mount Marshall, and Derby-West Kimberley have been gazetted and were in the process of forming committees. The State Government has made $125,000 available for work in soil conservation districts, with the Federal Government's national soil conservation programme making funding available on the basis that interest groups such as shires and farmers, meet part of the costs of the projects. He also said state funds would be directed towards community benefits.
