WISALTS column

(1984) WISALTS column. Elders Weekly, 19 April 1984. p. 16 [Publication] [Special Collections]

"Buy country at the top of the hill, the lower country is gradually worsening!". That is the advice from Alan White of Nepowie, given when the Wickepin WISALTS branch field day tour visited a couple of his properties. Mr White is a firm advocate of the principle of beginning a water control system on the high country. And on the first site visited, the group - still in the bus - went high on the catchment to see the level WISALTS system which was installed in early 1983. Although only about eight hectares was visibly salt affected, the nine kilometre system treats some 180 hectares, with one bank helping fill a pre-existing dam. Minimum tillage techniques are used in the increased cropping programme (a change from low stocked stud cattle) which Mr White felt would have been a disaster last year in that catchment without the Whittington banks. The second site visited was an 800 hectare farm purchased a few years ago, with about one third of that area being salt scald. The WISALTS grade system installed after all the internal fencing had been removes is proving largely successful in controlling high country water and flooding.
