Soils safeguard band grows

Wilson, K. (1984) Soils safeguard band grows. Western Farmer and Grazier, 12 April 1984. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

A groundswell of farmer interest in soil conservation which has resulted in the government approval of 20 soil conservation districts throughout the Western Australian wheatbelt in recent months. A further 20 are in the pipeline. Agriculture Minister Dave Evans said this week that $125,000 had been earmarked for work in soil conservation districts which had "specific community benefit". Additional money also was being provided through the National Soil Conservation Programme - this fiscal year, the amount was $67,000. Mr Evans said committees had been established in the Yilgarn, Jerramungup, Gingin and East Perenjori shire council areas. Three other councils - Dowerin, Mount Marshall and Derby-West Kimberley - had been gazetted and were in the process of forming committees. Other shires interested in forming a soil conservation district included Kellerberrin, Merredin, Mukinbudin, Narembeen, Trayning and Bruce Rock.
