No simple solution to salinity

Piggott, M. (1984) No simple solution to salinity. Western Farmer and Grazier, 24 May 1984. p. 44 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Salinity problems are site specific and require thorough preliminary investigations before remedies can be recommended. A salinity control field day at Frankland vineyard near Rocky Gully arranged by the Albany Agriculture Department demonstrated the progress it had made in controlling rising salinity. Departmental resource management division senior research officer, Dr Bob Nulsen said investigations showed the most viable option to halt salinity in dam irrigation water was to bypass the dam by pumping from the offending aquifer. Steve West, Albany department hydrologist, was responsible for much of the vineyard site planning. The vineyard manager, Ted Holland's options were to stop watering, which led to heavy production losses, to re-locate dams from the now saline valley or to seek a hydrological answer. Pumping had the advantage that it would avoid excessive earthworks. It was determined that lowering the water table, above a sub-surface rock bar which is a barrier above the dam, will stop the saline aquifer water coming to the surface and flowing into the dam.
