Summary

Concerns about conservation are not confined to the state or this country. The Commissioner for Soil Conservation has wide powers under the Soil and Land Conservation Act 1945-1982, including being able to direct a farmer to "adopt or refrain from adopting any agricultural or pastoral methods specified", when the Commissioner feels that "land degradation is occurring, or liable or likely to become liable to occur on that land or elsewhere". A survey is being carried out in Scotland by the Macaulay Institute of Soil Research titled, "Land capability classification for agriculture".
