Salinity 'must not be overlooked'

(2008) Salinity 'must not be overlooked'. The Countryman, 10 April 2008. p. 13 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Researchers warn that the fight against salinity may be in danger of slipping from public view and losing political backing as the issues of water management and climate change dominate the environmental agenda. Executive director of Future Farm Industries CRC, Kevin Goss, said that salinity was once touted as Australia's biggest environmental threat but that had been superseded by water over-allocation and climate change concerns. The Federal Government has a new environmental package, Caring for Our Country, which rolls in the previous government's National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality with a range of other programs. Lex Stone's Corrigin property is susceptible to dryland salinity which he has tried to manage using deep drains, pumping groundwater and using salt-tolerant plants. After 20 years of trial and error, Mr Stone believes an integrated approach combining engineering systems with growing certain plants, including genetically-modified strains of salt-tolerant wheat, offers the most promising solutions.
