Greens aim to redress damage

Llewellyn, P. (2008) Greens aim to redress damage. The Countryman, 4 September 2008. p. 20 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Paul Llewellyn, MLC, Greens Member for the South West Region writes to discuss how agricultural prosperity and rural communities have been built on land clearing and European farming practices with the devastating consequences of over-clearing in the form of land and stream salinity.
Mr. Llewellyn notes that agricultural communities are on a collision course with climate change in the form of declining rainfall and increasing temperatures.
Proposals from the Greens include an integrated strategy for salinity reduction, based on agroforestry and growing energy crops, along with incentives for developing renewable energy industries on farms.
Proposals for a strategically focused oil mallee planting program that will cover 20 percent of the Wheatbelt to tackle dryland salinity in the State's agricultural land.
Oil mallee is an efficient way to manage salinity as it offers a renewable energy solution ,helping to regenerate agricultural farmland.
Mr. Llewelyn said that tackling salinity through a renewable energy revolution in our agricultural regions, based partly on perennial bio--energy will revitalise farms and rural communities while addressing the challenges of climate change.
