Salt threat to wetland system

Quinton, S. (2008) Salt threat to wetland system. The Countryman, 31 July 2008. p. 15 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

The Blackwood Basin Group has criticised the State Government's proposal to transfer hyper saline water into the Blackwood River during high flow winter rains. In years of extreme rainfall, under the Blackwood Regional Drainage and Water Management Evaluation project, Lake Dumbleyung will overflow and its highly saline contents will travel through Wagin Lakes to the west, down the Beaufort River and finally into the Blackwood. Greg Hales, the manager of the Blackwood Basin Group Program, said if current farming practices continue the salt load will double over the next 100 years and four-fold if the scheme went ahead. The Blackwood Regional Drainage and Water Management Evaluation Project commissioned the CSIRO to assess the potential results of this proposal and compare this to potential alternatives.
