Perennials soak up water woes

Matthews, K. (2008) Perennials soak up water woes. The Countryman, 4 September 2008. p. 22 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

John, Diane and Richard Pickford of 'Beckwith' Woodanilling have managed to turn around a rising water table problem that was risking 30 percent of their farm's arable land. According to hydrologists from the Department of Agriculture, the problem at the Pickford's farm dates back 230 million years. The farm was once part of a fast flowing river and when the bedrock tilted, the water had nowhere to go. So while the native forest was able to manage the water table, clearing has brought the underlying salt to the surface. So in 1994, after planting trees and putting in catchment drainage, the Pickfords decided it was time to pick up the pace. The started by researching perennials and 14 years later they have managed to preserve the rising water table.
