River report held

Totaro, P. (1993) River report held. Sydney Morning Herald, 3 August 1993. pp. 1-4 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

A study by the Sydney Water Board has found that people who get wet in the Hawkesbury-Nepean are twice as likely to become ill as those who don't. The results from the community-based Hawkesbury Nepean River User Study group were presented with preliminary results the previous year. A public forum held at the University of Western Sydney attended by community groups, were told by a Water Board spokesman that no final document would be released because the study "had been subjected to peer review and found to be flawed". Geoff Noonan, manager of the EPA's freshwaters and wastewaters section, said the study did not "establish that there is a risk of infection for river users". The Water Board's research team was headed by the board's chief medical officer, Dr David Wilcox, and included its medical officer, principal scientist and a research officer. The study showed illness rates varied by location with Windsor and Wisemans Ferry users indicating the most illness. The study also showed that there was no difference between users and non-users for eye, ear, skin and chest infections, or for nausea and vomiting.
