Long reclamation battle won for Brookton farmer

(1975) Long reclamation battle won for Brookton farmer. Our Land, November 1975. pp. 1-3 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Brookton farmer Harry Whittington of 'Allendale', has almost won his 29 year battle against what was a 200 acres of waterlogged non-arable property. Today only some five acres total, in several patches, remain to be regenerated and indications are that another season or to will see their disappearance. This season there were 95 acres of wheat grown in a 100 acre paddock that would only grow 30 acres some ten years ago. The old family property was described in the 1910 edition of the Cyclopaedia of Western Australia as having unlimited water supply in the summer, but even ten years ago it was impossible to find water on it. Harry devised a plan to replace the functions of the trees and scrub that had been removed and constructed interceptor banks. In 1946, he contacted the United States Department of Agriculture and obtained information on work done by Dr Hugh Bennetts in the Tennessee Valley hydro-electric scheme. A series of tests were done to establish relevant data that confirmed a dry clay subsoil under the salt pan and salt content at the valley floor. Figures included in the article show the success of the programme.

This article contains five images of the property and one table showing relative cost factor of superphosphate in relation to production and income.
