$1.3 mil. salinity studies 'rub salt in wound'

Peak, S. (1986) $1.3 mil. salinity studies 'rub salt in wound'. 25 June 1986. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

The State Government will give $1.3 million over the next three years to two projects aimed at controlling salinity in Northern Victoria. The Agriculture Minister, Mr Walker said that funding would go to studies to develop salinity control measures in the Kerang Lakes region and the Campaspe Irrigation district. The Government recognises salinity is a major environmental problem, particularly in this part of the state and will be seeking the widest possible participation from local communities in our efforts to do something about it, Mr Walker said. The announcements follows protests from people in Northern Victoria who say the Government's $8.6 million Mineral Reserves Basins Scheme will ruin two lakes. A spokesman for the Halt the Salt protest group, Ross Hercott said if the government goes ahead with the Mineral Reserves Basins Scheme it will be a disaster, it is just transferring salt from one place to another.
