The Stanhope watertable

Heuperman, A.F. (1985) The Stanhope watertable. March 1985. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

The Stanhope depression which runs in an east-west direction south of Stanhope and crosses the Midland Highway at several locations. The effects of shallow water tables and associated salinity are visible from the highway, where areas of poor growth or bare patches show in the steep slopes draining into the depression. The Department of Agriculture looked into the water table situation particularly at a dry sub clover paddock in the Stanhope depression. At the bottom of the paddock a seepage area showed a green cover of strawberry clover in spite of the fact that the paddock had not been irrigated. It was determined that as no irrigation was applied this shallow water table it must be a result of high pressures in underlying aquifer sands. This was supported by the fact that a piezometer with a depth of 13 metres some distance downstream in the depression was overflowing during January this year.
