Suttie, K. Large scale lucerne irrigation in WA : Regan's Ford crop should top 60,000 tonnes a year. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

The first stage of a lucerne farm which could eventually produce up to 60,000 tonnes of crop a year has been launched at Regan's Ford. Australian Lucerne Farms Limited, a group of Western Australian businessmen, will irrigate about 270 hectares of its 405 hectare property using giant pivot irrigators and expects to take off 10,000 bales of lucerne a week when operating at peak production. A director of Australian Lucerne Farms Limited, Robert Hugall of Hugall and Hoile irrigation, supplied the Steriline pivot irrigator which was built in South Australia and is 506 metres long. The irrigator has a flow rate of 182,000 litres an hour and can cover its entire circle in 24 hours.

This article contains two images by Gary Shugg: the Steriline pivot irrigator at work; and Ray Jones and Robert Hugall, both directors of Australian Lucerne Farms Limited.
