"Grave dissatisfaction" behind Merredin's move

Maughan, J. "Grave dissatisfaction" behind Merredin's move. [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Letter to the editor feature shares views of John Maughan of Nukarni.
Mr. Maughan said the recent move by the Merredin zone council to withdraw from the Farmers' Union was generated from a feeling among many members of grave dissatisfaction.
Two major areas of dissatisfaction includes the poor image the union presents to the general community and the fact that the union is not a strong force when it comes to negotiating on behalf of the farming community.
There has been apathy among many farmers towards the Farmers' Union but it is no excuse for leaders to take a course of action that is conservative in the extreme.
A range of reforms have been put forward by a committee of the Merredin zone, some include conference resolutions being binding on all executives; the union to engage in public comment on issues associated with the welfare of the industry; the conference delegates to be properly credentialed.
