Red gum blight identified

Red gum blight identified. The Albany Advertiser, [Publication] [Special Collections]

A complex phantom blight killing marri trees in the Narrikup district has been identified, addressing concerns from farmers and soil conservation district members that the infestation could signal the start of widespread marri dieback in the Great Southern.
Three species of borers known as "bullseye' borers are attacking drought weakened marri, red gum, trees throughout the Great Southern.
Ralph Carter, a Narrikup farmer told the Albany Advertiser that marri trees on his property, Redhill were being killed by the blight.
Mr. Carter is concerned that if research into the problem is not targeted as a top priority by the Western Australian Conservation and Land Management Department and conservation groups, the blight will have drastic results for landowners.
Dr. Ian Abbott, the leader of the CALM entomology research program, based in Perth, said the borers were only part of the marri dieback problem.
Mr. Carter said he had noticed the signs of an attack from the borers five years ago.
Mr. Carter said the trees he first spotted, five years ago are now dead.
The borer is ringbarking the marri trees and causing them to "bleed".
