Huge earth bank systems join KI's fight to halt the salt

Swann, S. (1984) Huge earth bank systems join KI's fight to halt the salt. Stock Journal, 18 October 1984. p. 15 [Publication] [Special Collections]

Summary

Article discusses how a small but growing group of Kangaroo Island farmers are spending up to $1,000 a kilometre on elaborate, contoured earthworks to beat the spread of salt on their land.
The farmers are enthusiastically embracing an unconventional soil conservation philosophy pioneered in Western Australia and which they see as their only hope of arresting declining productivity and to protect their increasingly fragile soils.
The whole approach is viewed with official scepticism within the Departments of Agriculture of South Australia and Western Australia.
David Morris, a former farmer from Kingscote, introduced the WISALTS theory to the island.
Mr. Morris was led to seek advice from Harry Whittington, who developed the then radical theory of how salt encroachment occurred and how to stop it.
This article includes experiences of King Island farmers and work undertaken to install the interceptor banks.

This article contains four photographs, one image of farmer Lloyd Berry examining an interceptor bank; one image of WISALT surveyor David Morris and farmer Linc Wilson, who has installed 10 kilometres of banks; one aerial image of interceptor banks, and one image of farmer David Wilson looking over pitiful growth and salt affected land.
